Both "appreciate" and "would appreciate" are used when thanking someone. The first is used to thank someone for something they have already done for you; the second is used to thank someone in advance of doing something for you which in effect gets turned into a polite request.
Would Appreciate
'I/We would appreciate' is used when you are politely requesting something. It is used with the following structure:
ACTIVE VOICE:
I would appreciate it if you would/could ........ |
PASSIVE VOICE:
It would be appreciated if you would/could ....... |
NOTE: 'would appreciate' is seldom used in the passive 'would be appreciated'. The tone is very formal and such usage is generally considered to be out-of-date.
'I/We would appreciate...' can be used in two different situations. Firstly, it can be used by a subordinate writing to a superior or in some correspondence with a customer. The extra politeness is a sign of respect. For example:
I would appreciate it if you could sign the attached documents. I would appreciate it if you would inform John Leung about the changes. I would appreciate it if you could inform me in advance if you are coming or not. It would be appreciated if you could arrange this. |
Secondly, 'I would appreciate' can be used when you would like a colleague to do something for you which is difficult or time-consuming or makes them go out of their way for you. For example:
I know you are very busy at the moment, but I would really appreciate it if you could possibly read through and check my report before I submit it. Paul, I'd really appreciate it if you could handle my calls until my meeting finishes. |
Appreciate
'I/We appreciate..' is used when you are thanking someone or showing that you are grateful. You only use 'I/We appreciate' after someone has done something helpful, not before. For example:
We appreciate all the help you gave us last week. I appreciate all the hard work that you have put into this project. The information you gave us is much appreciated. |
